Administer as follows:
Drawing up Medication
If you are taking 1-2 amps/vials (75-150 IU) of medication daily -
Draw up 0.5 (one-half) cc of diluent (liquid) into the syringe. Inject all into one amp/vial of powder. The powder should dissolve quickly. Withdraw all of the mixture back into the syringe. You should still have 0.5 (one-half) cc even once mixed with the powder. Inject this mixture into the second vial/amp of powder. (If you are only taking one amp/vial per day skip over this step.) Let the second mixture dissolve. Once dissolved, draw mixture back up into the syringe. You should still only have 0.5 (one-half) cc of liquid mixture in the syringe.
If you are taking 3-4 amps/vials (225-300 IU) of medication daily -
Draw up 1 cc of diluent (liquid) into the syringe. Inject all into the first amp/vial of medication (powder). The powder should dissolve quickly. Withdraw all of this mixture back into the syringe. You should have 1 cc of liquid with one dissolved powder in it. Now, inject this mixture into the second amp/vial of powder. Let dissolve. Draw this mixture back into the syringe. You should now have 1 cc liquid with 2 dissolved powders in it. Inject mixture into the third amp/vial of powder and let dissolve. Withdraw all of the mixture back into the syringe. You now should have all three amps/vials dissolved into 1 cc of liquid. If you are on a dose of 3 amps/vials daily stop here, however, if your dose specifies 4 amps/vials daily then inject the above mixture into the fourth amp/vial of powder. Let dissolve. Draw back into the syringe. Now, you should have 1 cc liquid with four dissolved powders in it.
Administering the Medication
If you are taking intramuscular medication (I.M.) - Recap the needle on the syringe. Twist it off and discard. Replace needle with a 25G 1-1/2" needle. You are now ready to have someone give you the injection. Do not try to give yourself the injection! All I.M. injections should be given deep in either the right or the left upper, outer hip muscle. Your coordinator will instruct you as to the exact location or refer to the diagram at the bottom of the page.
If you are taking the subcutaneous mediation (S.Q.) - Recap the needle on the syringe that you used for mixing. Replace with a 25G 5/8" needle. You are now ready for your injection. You may give this injection to yourself or have someone else give it to you. All S.Q. injections can be given in any area where "an inch can be pinched" so in the lower abdomen, outer thigh, or back of the upper arm. The needle should be placed in the skin while the skin is pinched up. It should go all the way into the skin at a 90-degree angle.
All medications, when taking a single dose of 1, 2, 3 or 4 amps/vials daily, should be given in the afternoon. You should continue to take your Lupron every morning.
If you are instructed to take a total of 6 amps/vials of medication daily, then you will be getting a divided dose of 3 amps/vials in the a.m. and 3 amps/vials in the p.m. The reconstitution will be the same as above for mixing three powders together for each injection.
Choose a different injection site each day. If you are taking I.M. injections, alternate between the left and right hip. If you are taking S.Q. injections, you may alternate between any fatty tissue sites. Cleanse the injection site with a new alcohol swab. Hold the skin the way you were instructed. Slide the needle quickly all the way through the skin.
