Ovulation Induction Research

At Southeastern Fertility Center we have been very proud to sponsor a number of studies to help patients conceive with ovulation induction. These studies involve changes in the methods of ovarian stimulation and in the methods of sperm preparation.

Follicular Aspiration Study

In June of 2001, with we started a prospective study to evaluate the impact of aspirating excess follicles produced in ovulation induction cycles. This study was started in a effort to reduce high order multiple pregnancies from the ovulation induction program. Our own data and other published data has made it clear that patients undergoing ovulation induction treatment will have a much higher chance of a high order multiple pregnancy if they produce more than 4 mature eggs.

Through our study patients with more than 4 mature follicles produced in an ovulation induction cycle now have an option of either cycle cancellation or unilateral follicular aspiration. By aspirating the excess follicles we decrease the number of eggs available for fertilization and hopefully the decrease the chance for a high order multiple pregnancy.

Our data was presented at the American Society of Reproductive Medicine in 2004 and found a pregnancy rate of 31% in those patients needing follicular aspiration. If pregnant 60% of patients had a singleton pregnancy and the twin rate was 40%. There were no triplets or other high order multiple pregnancies. Our study is ongoing.
