Laparoscopy (Office and Hospital-based)
A woman's reproductive structures are located in her pelvis. Occasionally there can be conditions that affect the uterus, fallopian tubes or ovaries that can be corrected surgically.
Laparoscopy is a minimally invasive technique whereby pelvic pathology can be diagnosed and treated at the same time. Diagnostic and operative laparoscopy help evaluate gynecological problems such as uterine fibroids, structural abnormalities of the uterus, endometriosis, ovarian cysts and adhesions. Typically the patient can go home the same day.
Laparoscopy is performed after the patient is administered anesthesia and the abdomen is filled with carbon dioxide gas through the umbilicus. The gas helps visualize the reproductive organs. At the same time, while looking through the laparoscope instruments may be inserted into the abdomen in order to evaluate and treat abnormalities. There are various instruments that may be used in situations of abnormalities, including ultrasonic devices, lasers, grasping instruments, scissors and probes. Using these instruments, pelvic pathology can be corrected with operative laparoscopy.
We are able to offer these services by our physicians who are well versed in this type of surgery.
We offer in-office and hospital-based laparoscopy.
Office-based laparoscopy can be performed under local anesthesia at a greatly reduced cost. Office based laparoscopy is typically used only for diagnosis.
Hospital-based operative laparoscopy is typically performed when there is a high suspicion of an abnormality that can be surgically corrected via laparoscopy.
Hysteroscopy (Office and Hospital-based)
The inside of the uterus is known as the uterine cavity. In most instances of infertility it is necessary to evaluate the uterine cavity. There are different modalities that can be used, including hysterosalpingogram, sonohysterogram and hysteroscopy. We are able to perform all three of these techniques.
Hysteroscopy is often used to evaluate the uterus prior to IVF and for recurrent pregnancy loss and abnormal uterine bleeding and infertility. Hysteroscopy is also used to further evaluate the uterine cavity and to correct any abnormalities identified on hysterosalpingogram or sonohysterogram.
Hysteroscopy can easily be performed in our office using a microhysteroscope with practically no discomfort. Even small abnormalities may be addressed in the office. If there is an abnormality of the uterine cavity that cannot be addressed in the office, we are then able to have the procedure performed in the hospital on an outpatient basis.
