Tubal Anastomosis (Reversal Of Female Sterilization)

The most common form of permanent female sterilization is tubal ligation. The physicians at Southeastern Fertility Center (SEFC) offer reversal of tubal ligation (reconnecting the fallopian tubes) which in otherwise fertile patients results in a high pregnancy rate.

Before tubal anastomosis, a brief fertility evaluation is performed to ensure that ovulation is occurring on a regular basis and that there are no other causes of infertility. If no other signs can be identified, tubal anastomosis may be the best option for having another baby. If other disorders are identified, they can usually be treated. In some patients, in vitro fertilization provides the best pregnancy rates.

Tubal anastomosis is a surgical procedure that lasts approximately 2 hours. The surgeon makes a 3-4 cm skin incision to remove the blocked portion of the fallopian tubes and suture the fallopian tubes back together. This procedure can be performed in greater than 90% of all cases of female sterilization. Assuming normal underlying fertility, if 100 patients underwent reversal of tubal ligation, approximately 80 patients would successfully conceive and deliver a healthy baby.

This type of microsurgery is very delicate and must be performed by a reproductive surgeon with advanced training in laparoscopic surgery. If you are interested in tubal anastomosis we encourage you to contact Southeastern Fertility Center.
