Virtual Embryology Tour: Embryo Transfer

After the embryos have reached the appropriate growth stage for embryo transfer, as determined by the embryologist and physician, the embryos are transferred back to the uterus using a small, soft plastic tube known as a catheter.

After the physician prepares the patient for embryo transfer the embryologist loads the transfer catheter with the embryos and hands it to the physician. Under ultrasound guidance the flexible catheter is directed through the cervix and into the uterus where the embryos are deposited. After the embryo transfer is performed the catheter is handed back to the embryologist so it can be checked under a microscope to ensure that all the embryos were deposited.

Embryo transfer is a minor procedure similar to a pap smear that is performed in the surgical suite at SEFC. We then recommend 30 minutes of bed rest followed by a relaxing day.
